Rosacea is one of the most common skin concerns we see in clinic. Rosacea is a complex skin condition outwardly characterised by redness, flushing and often small lumps and bumps that look a little like pimples or breakouts. Often, rosacea is topically treated but as it is an anti-inflammatory response, the condition can respond well to lifestyle treatments like changes in diet.
The key to managing rosacea flare-ups and maintaining healthy, calm skin is revitalising and repairing your skin barrier. A well-functioning skin barrier will enable your skin to balance moisture, reduce reactivity and calm that aggressive red response we often experience with rosacea.

Here’s our 5-step protocol to help you take control of your skin, using a combination of at home and in-clinic treatments.
Step 1: Gentle Cleansing
Start with a gentle, irritant-free cleanser. Look for products designed for sensitive skin that won’t strip away your natural oils and reinforce your skin barrier. Cleanse your face with lukewarm water – hot water can exacerbate rosacea – and avoid scrubbing your skin.
Step 2: Moisturise and Protect
Hydration is key to maintaining your skin’s barrier. Use a moisturiser suitable for sensitive skin with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid. A good moisturiser should support your skin barrier function. Many rosacea sufferers mistakenly treat for oily skin or congestion and breakouts, but using the wrong type of moisturiser will send your skin into overdrive and exacerbate inflammation further.
An absolute non-negotiable – don’t forget daily sun protection! Sun burn and even just heat from the sun will irritate reactive skin. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from UV rays.
Step 3: Targeted Treatments
Incorporate anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide or azelaic acid into your skin care routine. These can help reduce redness and swelling. Over-the-counter options are available, or you can book a skin consultation with us for a recommended treatment plan tailored to your skin.
Step 4: In-Clinic Treatments
Take your treatment to the next level with our advanced in-clinic options. Our Healite LED therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses LED light to reduce inflammation and promote healing. We also offer advanced peels specifically formulated for rosacea-prone skin to help exfoliate gently and reduce redness. When the skin barrier has progressively healed after initial treatment, skin needling can also help support the strengthening of the capillary wall and potentially reduce the appearance of visible blood vessels.
Step 5: Consistent Care and Monitoring
Consistency is crucial in managing rosacea. Keep a diary to track your flare-ups and identify potential triggers. Regularly consult with a skincare professional to adjust your treatment plan as needed and ensure your skin is responding well to the treatments.
Bonus Tip: Avoid common rosacea triggers such as spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, and focus on managing your response to stress.
