A professional skin peel is a controlled exfoliation treatment designed to encourage your skin to shed dull, damaged or congested surface cells and make way for fresher, healthier skin underneath.
Depending on the peel, this can help with concerns like:
- pigmentation and sun damage
- acne and congestion
- fine lines and texture
- dull, tired-looking skin
- enlarged pores
- uneven skin tone
- post-breakout scarring
In simple terms? Think of it as a reset for your skin.
Not the terrifying 90s version where your face peels off in sheets while you hide indoors wearing a visor.
Are peels meant to make your skin peel?
Simply – NO. At least, not in a harmful or damaging way…
Significant skin peeling as a result of a skin peel treatment is probably the biggest misconception we hear. Some professional peels may result in a little flaking or dryness in the days afterwards. Others involve very minimal visible peeling at all. Modern peels are far more sophisticated than the aggressive treatments many people picture from the 80’s and 90’s..
The goal should NEVER be to “burn” your skin into behaving. It should always be to work intelligently with your skin, to encourage renewal, while keeping your barrier supported and healthy.
How do I know which peel I need?
This is where Google becomes deeply unhelpful.
Because the “best peel” depends entirely on what your skin is actually doing.
Pigmentation?
Congestion?
Rosacea-prone sensitivity?
Hormonal breakouts?
Ageing concerns?
A compromised skin barrier pretending to be oily skin?
Two clients could both come in saying “my skin looks dull” and need completely different treatments, which is exactly why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all peel recommendations, and we highly recommend a skin consultation before your first treatment with us.
Are peels only for ageing skin?
No! Peels can be incredibly helpful for:
- Acne-prone skin: Helping reduce congestion, oil build-up and post-breakout marks.
- Pigmentation and sun damage: Supporting a more even-looking skin tone over time.
- Fine lines and texture: Encouraging smoother, fresher-looking skin.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: Yes, even sensitive skin can sometimes tolerate the right peel. Gentle options exist.
Peels are not just “anti-ageing” treatments, they can also be incredibly effective for strengthening the skin barrier and addressing a variety of skin concerns.
Will one peel fix everything?
One peel can absolutely give your skin a visible refresh. But meaningful, lasting change when it comes to your skin usually comes from consistency over time. (It’s a bit like going to Pilates once and expecting abs).
A single session will offer results, but implementing a tailored treatment plan is where the real transformation happens. We can help you develop a plan that feel right for your skin goals and budget in-clinic.
Is there downtime?
This depends on the type of peel and your skin. You might experience:
- some tightness
- mild redness
- a little dryness or flaking
- temporary sensitivity
Or you might have none of the above. Your skin response depends on your skin condition, the peel chosen, your homecare, and how well your barrier is functioning beforehand. Prep and aftercare can really support how well your skin tolerates the treatment and any after-effects. We give all our clients thorough skin treatment preparation instructions beforehand, and aftercare dos and don’ts.
Can I just buy an at-home peel instead?
Yes, but we wouldn’t recommend this for your first peel. At-home exfoliating products can absolutely have a place in your routine.
But professional peels are:
- stronger
- more targeted
- professionally selected
- carefully layered if needed
- paired with expert aftercare
The difference is a bit like comparing a home workout with working alongside a personal trainer who actually knows what your body needs. Same category with very different outcomes.
Which Peel Is Right For Me?
The honest answer? It depends entirely on your skin.
Your concerns, skin sensitivity, barrier health, treatment history and goals all play a role in choosing the right peel, which is exactly why we recommend starting with a skin consultation if you’re new to professional treatments.
Here’s a guide to the peel treatments we currently offer in-clinic:

Thermal Detox Peel

Who shouldn’t have a peel?
Peels aren’t suitable for everyone, and suitability can change depending on your season. There are times when we may press pause, including if:
- your skin barrier is compromised
- you’re pregnant or breastfeeding (depending on treatment)
- you’re using certain active medications
- you’ve recently had other treatments
- you have active irritation, eczema or inflammation
This is exactly why we recommend a new client skin consultation before your treatment with us. We’d love to see you and support your journey to optimum skin barrier health. Click here to book your skin consult or call us on 0425 333 220 to chat to us.
